Who else can feel the pulse of trends better than an insider who is also a color professional?

For this reason… we have decided to turn towards one and get more answers to your trendy queries!

Here's an interview with an 'in touch' coloring specialist, Shantaye Simms from the GlamBar Salon, Castleberry, Atlanta.

She was generous enough not only to review the current hair coloring trends but also to give us valuable tips on dyeing and its propositions in general.

Here's the transcript of the interview:

An interview was conducted today for HairFad.com with Shantaye Simms, color technician at the GlamBar Salon, in Atlanta's historic Castleberry district…

Here's what she had to say:

1. What colors are popular this season?

Definitely the bold colors: reds, not so much earth tones, brighter colors… bronze, ruby red…

Like everything else coloring trends either seem to change with each season.

Generally speaking hair colors lighten in the spring and summer and darken in the fall and winter.

As far as current hair color trends are concerned, you can also witness, some movement back to the retro looks.

Platinum blonde is making a huge comeback, as are sun-kissed highlights.

Wild colors that are reminiscent of the 80s punk era are also becoming popular again. Rich colors will also be big in the coming months.

2. Are there any new techniques now to go with the new hair color trends?

There is a new technique that I'm using that involves parting the hair and using a brush to apply the color. The color is applied in a stroking motion, resulting in a highlight effect that is more blended than traditional highlights or foils.

3. Why is hair coloring so complex… so hard to get just right?

People have a lot of different undertones in their hair. Hair is never how it appears. It may look a certain way, but when you start lifting the color, different tones are exposed. It's simple, but not simple. Hair coloring is a science.

4. How do you choose which colors are right for a client?

I go by several things, including lifestyle, what their hobbies are, skin tones and the current haircut they are wearing… skin tone mainly.

5. How are celebrities influencing the trends in hair color?

They're always trend setters. Beyonce, Rihanna… those are probably the top two names, people come in asking to have color like.

6. Any special tips or tricks to improve coloring results during an application?

It's all about preparation. If you know you want to get color, prepare your hair weeks, or even months in advance. Make sure you're conditioning your hair; that it's not brittle or breaking off. Hair color is a chemical, so if your hair is already in a bad state, it will make it even worst.

7. Can color alone make a style?

It can make or break it! Generally I say though, the shorter the style, the spicier the color that you can do… the client in the photo above is an excellent example of that…

8. How long can results be expected to last?

It really depends on the color and the type of color, also the type of shampoo. Use a color maintenance shampoo to keep color the longest.

9. Can coloring damage the hair in any way?

Well you have to remember, it's a chemical. If hair coloring is left on too long, it can over-process and damage the hair.

10. Is there any other consideration people should keep in mind when it comes to color?

Just have fun! Allow it to express who you really are; and if you don't know what you're doing, don't let your hair be the experiment--go to a professional.

Thank you so much Shantaye for sharing your valuable insights on color trends and of course for the bonus tips, tricks and techniques on hair coloring.

In summary:

Hair color trends keep changing and keep repeating themselves. They go and come back a few years or decades later. But what don't ever change are the 'rules of coloring.'

A trendy hair color is of course trendy, but when you want a color that you can wear anywhere with confidence and ease, it is of utmost importance to follow the universal norms of hair coloring. And yes do not ignore the aftermath color tips.

I repeat as ever…

  • Do not go for a hair color just because it's trendy and looks chic on someone else.
  • Do not ever forget to customize your hair color to your own lifestyle, skin tones, current haircut and even your hobbies.
  • If you like to say 'My trendy hair color rocks', follow the norms of dyeing hair for good. That's the only way you can rock your brand new hair color style!
